Hello again ... perhaps you might combine this with my previous post (still being moderated) ... i notice that you emphasise that journalism should DO lots of things ... but don't you think there is a crying need for professional development FOR journalists to BECOME something more than we are right now?

(BTW, I tried sending a message to your email address on this site and it bounced ...)

Hello: interesting position. many of my students say they want to get into journalism to "get involved" and this seems to be what you're proposing. There is an immediate and obvious challenge to the "objectivity" of journalism which has besotted our profession for decades but which is really rather thin ... so where to from here?

I work for a newspaper/website on the business side. I'm concerned that there is nothing in your article on where the money is going to come from to pay the salaries of journalists. This doesn't seem to be addressed in the recent conference either, full of journalists and academics. Shouldn't you be focused on new kinds of context-specific web ads that are better than what Yahoo can offer? About how citizen journalism can lead to behavioral targeting for advertisers? About how to recapture part of the classfied marketplace? About how to make the newspaper a marketplace where people come to buy and sell things, with the journalists getting a cut, as they do now when they are paid with advertising revenue? The closest I've seen is a little bit suggesting a newsletter model - where high-end information is produced with high prices paid by readers, and then content trickling down from there. It's interesting that you would focus here on how journalism can happen by citizens with few journalists involved, rather than how you can fund journalists.
